Toyota is testing its battery electric vehicle (BEV) Hilux ute to assess its performance in different conditions before manufacturing it in Thailand by the end of 2025.
Utes make up more than half of total vehicle sales in Thailand, a market for Toyota flooded by Chinese EV manufacturers and where the Japanese auto giant has a large manufacturing base, Reuters reports.
Toyota Motor Asia executive vice president Pras Ganesh told Reuters at the Future Mobility Asia Exhibition and Summit in Thailand (May 15-17) it intends producing the Hilux BEV there, primarily for the local market but with export possibilities.
Pricing and specifications have yet to be revealed.
Isuzu also intends manufacturing its electric D-MAX pickup truck in Thailand.
