Toyota New Zealand has confirmed it will recall a total of 3615 vehicles nationwide due to a radar sensor issue.
The recall impacts most of the brand’s more diminutive models, namely the Yaris, Yaris Cross, GR Yaris hot hatch, and the C-HR. Customers with a model built between May 2020 and July 2021 can expect a recall letter from the brand soon.
The issue concerns the millimetre wave sensor connected to Toyota’s Pre-Collision System (PCS). If the sensor hasn’t been initialised properly, the PCS can be inoperable without the driver knowing.
The announcement follows a similar recall in Australia, implicating 18,490 vehicles.
“An inoperative PCS, without a PCS malfunction indicator, may increase the risk of a crash in certain driving situations,” says Toyota Australia.
“This is a precautionary measure to confirm and, if necessary, reinitialise the millimetre wave sensor (radar sensor) used to support the vehicle’s collision avoidance system,” adds Toyota New Zealand’s statement on the recall.
“Vehicles will be inspected and, if required, the millimetre wave sensor will be repaired free of charge by Toyota stores. This work will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete,” adds Toyota New Zealand.
“Owners of the vehicles, which are traceable through registration data, will be contacted by Toyota New Zealand by letter.”
