Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has credited its strong registration figures from April to sales of its all-new Outlander PHEV and recently updated Eclipse Cross PHEV plug-in hybrid pairing.
While both nameplates have been popular sellers in recent times, particularly following the introduction of the Clean Car Discount, their first- and third-place finishes for the month represent a first for models with an available plug-in hybrid variant.
In a press release, the brand said the result helps to cement “its reputation as the hybrid brand of choice for environmentally conscious Kiwis”. Although it’s worth noting that the one brand that beat Mitsubishi for overall market share, Toyota, offers a comprehensive hybrid line-up.
Mitsubishi boasts that out of its 1623 registrations in April, a whopping 971 were PHEVs, accounting for 60% of the brand’s sales. Ironically, the Eclipse Cross PHEV outsold the Outlander PHEV, 496 units to 475.
Both models were benefactors of utes not featuring in the Motor Industry Association registration data, largely thanks to distributors registering their stocks in bulk in March, in order to avoid Clean Car Discount levies that debuted on April 1.
“Since launching the Next Generation Outlander PHEV just two months ago, we’ve fielded an unprecedented level of enquiry for our PHEV range,” said Reece Congdon, MMNZ Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs.
“Having two PHEV models break into the top three for the month, accounting for 11% of the total market share for April, is a huge testament to how well positioned these vehicles are for families and young professionals.
“At a time of rising fuel costs, squeezed household budgets and environmental concerns, we’re proud to be seen as the hybrid brand of choice for Kiwis who value their own back yard and want to explore it in affordable, responsible and practical way,” said Congdon.
The brand’s strong PHEV sales appear set to continue, too. In its release, it boasts that it’s fielded another 1500 confirmed orders for plug-in hybrids.
