The next-generation Ford Ranger ute unveiling on November 24 is expected to include a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Due in 2023, the new Ranger is part of Ford’s commitment to provide a zero-emissions capable version of its European commercial vehicle line-up by 2024, introducing the new PHEV powertrain option, Autocar UK reports.
It will feature on Ford’s YouTube channel where design hints have already been provided, although Ford says it won’t give powertrain options until the reveal, Ford NZ encouraging people to sign up for updates to find out more.
Ford did more than 5000 interviews and worked with hundreds of owners, in dozens of workshops across the globe to find out how owners used their utes, what they liked, what they wished it had and what experiences mattered the most to them.
This customer-centric approach helped Ford design and engineer solutions with the next-generation Ranger that customers want and would appreciate.
While little is known about the Ranger’s PHEV powertrain, Australian website CarExpert earlier suggested it will be an electrified version of Ford’s 2.3-litre turbo petrol Ecoboost engine, the PHEV option reported earlier this year by EVs and Beyond.
Ford and Volkswagen confirmed a wide-ranging global alliance last year, whereby the two will join forces to develop commercial vehicles and pick-ups, including a Ford EV built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform.
Meanwhile Ford is expanding its South Africa operations to ready its Silverton factory for production of the new Ranger, including adding more than 4000 solar-equipped car ports, the plant reportedly aiming to become energy self-sufficient and carbon neutral by 2024.
