Car sharing service, GoGet, has joined with independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP Safety, to remind employers and employees to make safer choices when using a vehicle for work.
Around 1 in 4 of all trips taken on Australia’s roads each year are made by employees driving as part of their routine employment.
While many organisations – big and small – now have established policies which require the use of 5 star ANCAP safety rated fleet vehicles, an aspect which is regularly overlooked is the use of generally older, less safe private vehicles for work purposes.
“Car sharing is a well-known smart option for those who want to save money by replacing their need to own a vehicle, or their need for a second vehicle. Beyond private users, we are also seeing more and more employers and employees using GoGet vehicles as a smarter, safer alternative to using private vehicles at work,” says GoGet Chief Executive, Tom Davey.
“Grey fleet vehicle use is an area which can be overlooked by employers. A vehicle used for work purposes is considered a place of work, therefore employers have a duty of care to ensure their employees are travelling in a safe vehicle,” says Davey.
“While we may not realise it, the vehicle is an extension of the workplace and just as we provide our employees with a safe workspace in the office, factory or worksite, we must also provide them with a safe vehicle,” says ANCAP chief executive, James Goodwin.
“Workplace responsibilities also extend to employees using private vehicles for work purposes.”
“Grey fleets can be a challenge for employers and employees alike, so if driving for work purposes and a fleet or pool-vehicle is not an option, a safer alternative may be to consider 5 star car-share vehicle,” says Goodwin.
